                          REFLECTION TASK 2A
                               CORRECTED VERSION

Hello everyone! I am Fatma Ege, a columnist working for the TIME Magazine. In this week, I will mention not very famous person, Frank Sinatra as an actor and a singer, his qualities and accomplishments. Maybe some of you say “how he would be not very famous man?” I think so but whomever I question “Do you like Frank Sinatra?” answers by asking “Who is he?” I cannot understand how one lives without ever listening “Fly Me to the Moon” or watching “High Society”. They are the best I know about him.  In 1953, he won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his performance in “From Here to Eternity. He performed in fifty seven films, worked as a producer in seven films and as a director in one film. He also appeared in television series, specials and cameos. Some of his songs colored up films as soundtracks. Also the songs of Sinatra are very romantic and full of love. While I am listening to them, I feel the love deeper. The best example of it can be “Something Stupid” which is a duet Frank Sinatra made with his daughter, Nancy Sinatra.  Because of the whole things I have listed, he deserves one of the best known men of all time to me. I hope that after reading my column, the first thing you will do is to listen to Frank Sinatra and watching him

               REFLECTION TASK 3
                                                   CORRECTED VERSION

If I were a jury member of the committee choosing the person of the year, I would choose Nelson Mandela who was a South African anti-apartheid, which means racial segregation, revolutionary, politician, activist, lawyer, and philanthropist, who served as President of South Africa from 1994 to 1999. There are lots of reasons of that. First and foremost, he was willing to sacrifice his freedom, his dignity, the safety of his family and every earthly possession to prove to the world that the sufferings are humans just like those approving of apartheid.  His courageous, selfless actions brought knowledge to many who were unaware of the power struggle in South Africa and the huge human toll that it took. The strongest characteristic of Nelson Mandela would be defiance.  I think that his activist stance against Apartheid policies demonstrates this. Nelson Mandela was also an astounding human being willing to sacrifice everything to do the apartheid in South Africa.  Mandela was also a rare visionary who would see beyond the current struggles and pain. He was convinced that one day the best parts of humanity would prevail over the worst parts. He even inspired his enemies to be better than they had been, through forgiveness and reconciliation. Because of his being black person, he dedicated himself to fight against racism. Instinctively, Mandela knew skin color was cosmetic. He knew men and women were equal.  He knew skin color was evidence of race, not character, which is the biggest reason why I think that Nelson Mandela who died in the last month of 2013 deserves being chosen the person of the year.

ABBEY - a short documentary

                   REFLECTION TASK 2B

First of all, this video is about the Beatles. It was prepared in 16 August 12 as it had been 43 years since The Beatles crossed Abbey Road for their famous 1969 album cover.  In this video, people from different nations in the Abbey Road where the famous the Beatles photograph took express how much they love the Beatles and what the Beatles means for them. Probably, the video maker also loves the members of the Beatles so much as he starts the video with a song of the Beatles, “I’ve Got a Feeling”. While singing the song, he is so cheerful and joyful. In some part of the video, there are sections of the Beatles songs such as “Help”, “Come Together”, “Here Comes the Sun”. And also people in the Abbey Road sing the songs such as “Let It Be”, “All My Loving”, and “Yesterday”.  Like the others, I love members of the Beatles, their songs, their attitude to life and everything about them. This is the biggest reason why I chose a video about the Beatles. Moreover, today, January 10, is the day when John Lennon was killed by an unconscious man before thirty four years ago. Therefore, I wanted to commemorate Lennon who was an indispensable member of the Beatles. All in all, I like the video as much as I love the Beatles and I totally agree about the arguments in that. The Beatles really knew how to express their feelings. Because they put their real emotions in the songs, I find also my feelings while I listening them. Consequently, I appreciate the video maker for his special efforts for the Beatles.

                       REFLECTION TASK 1B
Social networking sites are becoming so popular in these days. For some people, they would have nothing to do if the social networking sites such as Facebook, Twitter were not. Therefore, what made me choose this topic is the obsessive thought of the people. Because those sites are important for me, too but they are not a big part of my life, I cannot understand the idea of giving the control of their life to social networking sites. Those people spend their most of time for those sites instead of their family, friends and observing what happening around them. Hence, too hanging out in those sites makes us anti-social although their name is the “social” networking sites. The other thing that disturbs me is that people ignore the grammatical rules of their native language. They do not attach importance to the right writing of the words by using abbreviation. And also as everything related to those sites are in English, people neither write them correctly in English nor try to translate them into Turkish such as using “tivitır” instead of “twitter”.  As a person studying over foreign languages, I care about using the correct grammar in each language. I try to warn the people also but just I or just you cannot change them. Therefore, we need to gather and make every obsessive people be aware of this issue.
